I feel that the cross sometimes portrayed as a crucifixion maybe analogous to ones spiritual path as in contrast to a religious path. I feel that the spiritual path is a personal self growth path that takes one beyond the personal agendas, programmes, cultural, religious and brain washing conditioning. Whereas the religious path may follow a dogma or personal guru indoctrination. The spiritual path therefore tries to free one of the dogmas and perhaps rituals that entrain one on a set path of patterns and thereby restraining the tendency to wander away and do one's own thing.
Doing one's own thing is not necessarily a spiritual path and merely can play into the hands of the outstretched tentacles of the ego and self aggrandizement. The spiritual path is all inclusive and sets it quest on the liberation for all.
So the cross maybe the erosion of the self to find the greater self. To turn out the self and find the Self is likened to a blocked pipe which prevents the inflow of the invigorating Self which is felt like something unworldly and yet all fulfilling. It relaxes the body and by this relaxation invites the flow and as much as one can relax so the flow increases and one can feel spirit, energy, joy a real deep peace and akin in analogy to a sparkling chortling tingling brook which refreshes the body from perhaps a tired weary old world.
