One of the reasons we may put on weight and even become obese is that we need to confirm ' I am a solid grounded human being and cannot be blown away especially by the vicissitudes of the age, especially old age'.
Could it be psychologically and ego wise we protect ourselves from reality in the way that reality is what we make it. One may come to realise that reality is frail so we bolster it up with being a big rounded me, then again the ego me really knows when it is not in denial it is merely an expedient, transitory seeming solid illusion that can shape shift in order to preserve itself and so secure a temporary arrangement and preserve the shifting volcanic eruptions and foundations that can quake and crack. So to pile on pounds in order to build up and establish the platforms and foundations, the very footings adding more concrete making the me more safe.
How long can one hide behind the fortress of the ego and its amazing shifts to facilitate the egos skills to accommodate its reality which at best last as long as the body.
When senility and memory decline, there can be a shock when the realisation hits home that one is a mere memory stick and one can just swap one stick for another and the house of cards that seemed so real collapses. When the remaining memory banks run out there appears a space and its OK to be without memory as long as one is aware that one is the silent witness in that space.
